The Loveable Rogues are a pop trio that consists of the band members Sonny Jay, Té Eugene and Eddie Brett, who discovered fame by competing on Britain’s Got Talent in 2012. The boys are currently on their final headlining tour, This and That tour, after announcing their split earlier this year. During their gig at The Institute in Birmingham, on November 8th, I got the opportunity to spend time with the guys before the show and to then sit down and chill with the lads in their dressing room. The interview got a bit heated at times, conversation ranging from chocolate to a lot more inappropriate subjects. I got to know the ins and outs of the Loveable Rogues, getting more personal with each member and seeing what they all have planned for the future…
INTERVIEW
What are you looking forward to the most tonight?
Sonny: *jokingly* “Going home!”
Té: “Obviously we’ve just released our album, so I’d say I’m looking forward to performing, it’ll be nice to hear the fans singing back the words to us”
What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done?
Sonny: “A fan found out where I lived, and then put a £5 through the letterbox saying “Oh buy yourself a drink, congratulations”. I mean it’s nice but very… weird.”
Eddie: “Stalker…”
What’s your favourite thing about being on tour?
Eddie: “I like staying away from home. Like, getting to know other cities; getting to see new stuff and things”
Saskia: “Do you get to go round places, spending time in the cities when you travel?”
Eddie: “It depends. You don’t have to go far to see the difference within cities. We just went in a little Irish pub, it’s full of old people and cheap food and stuff like that. Whereas, where we live in London, you don’t really get.”
Sonny: “Tell her want we wanted to do…”
Té: “What did we want to do?”
Sonny: “You have a custard factory! We wanted to go to the custard factory!”
Have you got anything special planned for the last day on your tour?
Eddie: “Fireworks display, outside the venue. ‘Cause obviously it was Bonfire Night the other night, so its discounted prices, so we thought make the most of the two situations”
Saskia: “Kill two birds with one stone”
Sonny: “Let’s not talk about killing anything whilst talking about fireworks, just in case…”
*touches wooden dressing table*
What are your plans for after tour?
Té: “We’ve still got a few more gigs!”
Eddie: “Our last gig is on December 30th, in Pontypridd, be there!”
Sonny: “CHRISTMAS. It’s always a good time of the year”
What has been your more embarrassing moment on stage?
Eddie: “Té loves farting on stage”
Té: “I do fart on stage, I don’t find it embarrassing though, I quite enjoy it actually…I like my own farts, I feel the benefits, it’s yous that suffer, I’m quite content”
Eddie: “It’s not very nice playing guitar outside in the cold, it’s not embarrassing I know but it’s just horrible”
Té: “Sonny has one… Basically we were playing at this gig and he went to throw the guitar pick to someone in the crowd, trying to be all cool, and nearly fell off stage… I was embarrassed for him.”
Sonny: “Thanks…”
Have any of you ever fallen off stage?
Eddie: “Nah”
Sonny: “I’ve jumped off stage and not been able to get back on… That’s ‘cause I’m really f***ing small.”
Té: “I remember me getting back on and you just being at the bottom lost”
Sonny: “I actually had to get the guy on the security to get me back on. He basically gave me a leg up and was like *patronisingly* “THERE YA GO” I was just like “THANK YOUUU”.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
Sonny: “Does it have to be just one?!”
Saskia: “You can pick multiple people but try pick an ultimate one”
Sonny: “Ariana Grande”
Eddie: “Natalie Portman”
Té: “I don’t know… Um…”
Sonny: “Cheryl Cole”
Té: “Rihanna! I’m gunna try think of an English person…”
Eddie: “They don’t have to be English”
Té: “No but I wanna think of someone English… Melissa Steel, that’s it!”
Saskia: “Who’s that…”
Té: *starts singing* “KISSES FOR BREAKFAST, EARLY IN THE MORNIN’, you know. She’s a little fitty. And Jess from Neon Jungle, she’s piffy.”
Do you still stay in contact with anyone from Britain’s Got Talent?
Sonny: “Not really…”
Té: “Charlotte, you know Jonathan and Charlotte”
Sonny: “I’ve got Pudsey on SnapChat”
Té: “Pudsey’s amazing”
Saskia: “It’s slightly depressing because he has more talent than I do…”
Eddie: “He’s more talented than us according to the British public”
Sonny: I’ve got a question for you… Does the light in this fridge turn off when I close the door?
Té: “What do you want her to do, get inside the fridge?”
*starts messing with the fridge door repetitively*
Saskia: “That is NOT happening; we can end it on that note! Thank you boys!”
All: “Thank you!”
After the interview, I watched the boys perform from the balcony of the venue. Being on the balcony allowed me to have a birds-eye view of the crowd, and you could see the anticipation from the crowd from a mile away, the room was buzzing and the atmosphere was electric. As soon as the lads took to the stage the crowd went wild and got involved instantly.
The thing I enjoyed the most was the fact that they don’t take it, or themselves, too seriously. Obviously this is what they do for a living and know to some degree you have to be serious, but you can just tell that they really do enjoy what they do, and because they enjoy themselves, everyone else enjoys themselves.
Music wise it was very good. Their harmonies were flawless, all the music was live and they just put on a fantastic show. You really cannot compare them to anyone else, and I wouldn’t want to, they are themselves and they know what they’re good at, and they do it so flawlessly, so effortlessly. There were times when it got a bit emotional, but it was expected as it was their final show before they split.
